Man spears son to death over land

Police in Kabale are holding an 80-year-old man for allegedly spearing his son to death following a land dispute.

Charles Katarakwenda, a resident of Nyakiharo cell, Mwanjari ward, Southern Division in Kabale Municipality, is alleged to have speared Andrew Ndyareeba, 42.

The incident occurred on Friday at around 3pm while at their home in Nyakiharo. Ndyareeba was a night watchman at Ndorwa Secondary School in Kabale town.

Katarikwenda is said to have given Ndyareeba a piece of land two years ago as a share on the family property. However, a misunderstanding erupted when Katarikwenda changed his mind and withdrew the said piece of land from Ndyareeba.

Moses Tubaho, a neighbour to the family says he was alerted by noise of the two fighting. Tubaho told police that when he arrived to separate them, Katarakwenda picked a spear and stabbed Ndyareeba on the left shoulder from the back as he cursed him to die.

Ndyareeba died as a result of excessive bleeding as locals prepared to rush him to Kabale Regional Referral Hospital for treatment.

Elly Maate, the police spokesperson for Kigezi region told this reporter that Katarikwenda was immediately arrested and detained at Kabale Police Station pending further investigations.

He said the suspect will appear in court to answer charges of murder.
