Uganda: Government starts fresh count of schools

Kampala. The Ministry of Education and Sports together with Uganda Bureau of Statistics (Ubos) have flagged off a team of 311 researchers to compile a master list of education institutions across the country.

While flagging off the team at Ubos headquarters yesterday, Education minister Janet Museveni said the list will help them strengthen education systems.

“The education master list will help us to review legal and policy framework as well as development of education management information systems which are all aimed at realisation of reliable and timely data for education and sports sector,” she said.

Ms Museveni said regular collection of quality and timely statistics and information is pivotal to decision making, planning, budgeting, policy analysis, resource allocation and reporting for the education and sports sector.

She said despite the numerous data collection efforts, the information requirements for the sector are yet to be fully satisfied.

The minister said the master list, which started yesterday, ends in April and targets all institutions at all levels of education.

The acting Ubos executive director, Mr Vitus Kato Mulindwa, said statistics acts a mirror of what is happening in society which makes different actors to undertake inventions in alleviating plight of people.

“I am delighted that several programmes and interventions have been executed as a result of our previous surveys and censuses among them construction of more schools to reduce on distant learning,” he said.
