Three perish, 10 injured in road accident along Kitui-Machakos highway

Three people have died in a grisly road accident involving a 14-seater matatu along the Kitui-Machakos highway.

Ten others have been rushed to Machakos level 5 referral hospital with serious multiple injuries after undergoing first aid at Mwala level 4 hospital.

The accident involved a matatu trading under Kinathi Sacco.

Mwala sub county police commander, Ronald Kirui, confirming the incident said the accident occurred at Ghetto area, just a few kilometers from Wamunyu shopping center.

The accident was caused by a tyre burst.

“The driver lost control of the vehicle after a tyre burst and the vehicle veered off the road and overturned, occasioning injuries, three of them fatal,” Kirui told The Standard in a phone interview.

The number of passengers on board the matatu at the time of the accident was not immediately established.

Bodies of the deceased were moved to Machakos level 5 hospital mortuary.
