Nairobi, Kenya – Torrential rains have caused widespread flooding in Nairobi, prompting authorities to issue mandatory relocation orders for residents of 37 high-risk areas, primarily informal settlements and low-lying suburbs.
The Ministry of Interior reported significant displacement in Mukuru, Mathare, and other flood-prone neighborhoods. President William Ruto has mobilized the National Disaster Management Unit, pledging government land for temporary resettlement.
Emergency response teams are struggling to reach residents trapped by rapidly rising waters, highlighting deficiencies in the capital’s aging drainage infrastructure.
Urban planners and climate experts have warned that Nairobi’s vulnerability to increasingly frequent extreme weather events underscores the urgent need for climate-resilient infrastructure.
“These floods are symptomatic of decades of underinvestment in urban resilience and drainage capacity,” said Dr. Mercy Ochieng, a Nairobi-based urban specialist.
Authorities are coordinating with humanitarian organizations to provide shelter, food, and medical assistance to those affected, but long-term solutions remain elusive as city planners push for integrated flood management strategies.
