ADDIS ABABA – Ethiopia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Thursday detailed a sweeping diplomatic offensive aimed at cementing its role as the economic and political anchor of the Horn of Africa.
Spokesperson Nebiat Getachew told reporters that high-level delegations from Burundi, Liberia, and South Sudan concluded working visits this week, resulting in a series of bilateral agreements centered on food security and digital infrastructure.
Ethiopia is increasingly leveraging its “Green Legacy” environmental program and the “Fayda” digital ID system as exportable governance models to its neighbors.
The diplomatic flurry comes as China’s Special Envoy for the Horn of Africa met with Ethiopian officials to discuss regional stability and the expansion of the Belt and Road Initiative.
The discussions focused on agricultural modernization and the integration of Ethiopian AI initiatives into regional trade corridors.
“These engagements enable Ethiopia to project its position on global issues while strengthening the homegrown economic agenda,” Nebiat said.
However, regional analysts note that Ethiopia’s push for leadership continues to be shadowed by delicate negotiations over the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) and internal efforts to stabilize post-conflict northern regions.
