ADDIS ABABA – The Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) has signaled a potential political crisis by calling for the immediate reinstatement of the Tigray Regional Council, challenging the current interim governance structure.
In a statement issued following a high-level Central Committee meeting, the TPLF argued that the interim administration—established after the 2022 Pretoria Peace Agreement—needs a “total restructuring” to remain effective.
The party claims that the federal government has stalled on key aspects of the peace deal, including the total withdrawal of “invading forces” from Tigrayan territory and the return of internally displaced persons.
The move marks a significant shift in the TPLF’s stance toward the federal government in Addis Ababa.
By demanding that the 2020-elected council return to work, the TPLF is asserting regional sovereignty that could complicate its relationship with Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed. Simultaneously, Ethiopia is looking outward to bolster its economy; the Ethiopian Ambassador to Pakistan met with trade officials in Islamabad today to finalize a new industrial collaboration agreement aimed at boosting regional connectivity.
