DAR ES SALAAM – A Commonwealth Special Envoy concluded a high-level visit to Tanzania on Monday, aimed at assessing the country’s progress toward electoral reforms and political inclusivity ahead of upcoming local polls.

The mission, which included meetings with President Samia Suluhu Hassan and various opposition leaders, focused on the implementation of recommendations made during the last election cycle.

While the envoy praised the “opening of political space” under President Hassan’s leadership, the mission’s final communiqué emphasized the need for more robust legal frameworks to protect freedom of the press and assembly.

Tanzania has been under international scrutiny as it attempts to move away from the more restrictive policies of the previous decade.

The Commonwealth’s involvement is seen as a stamp of legitimacy for the government’s “R4” strategy (Reconciliation, Resilience, Reforms, and Rebuilding). Analysts suggest that the success of these reforms will be critical for Tanzania’s bid to attract more foreign direct investment in its burgeoning liquefied natural gas (LNG) sector.
