ADDIS ABABA – Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed announced on Sunday that Ethiopia is on track to hit a historic $10 billion in annual export earnings, driven by a surge in domestic manufacturing and a strategy of import substitution.
Opening the fourth “Made in Ethiopia” Expo, Abiy reported that manufacturing growth has jumped to 10.7% this year, up from 4.7% just three years ago. The Premier credited the “Made in Ethiopia” movement for reviving nearly 1,000 previously shuttered factories and attracting over 3,600 new investors.
The government has identified 96 products for local production to reduce reliance on foreign goods.
Abiy warned that expanding domestic production is the only way to shield the country from “mounting debt burdens” that threaten future generations.
He urged manufacturers to look beyond the domestic market and target the broader African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).
