ADDIS ABABA, Ethiopia – Ethiopia launched a major push for climate finance on Monday as it hosted the Climate Investment Funds (CIF) Global Knowledge Exchange, an event aimed at bridging the funding gap for green development in Africa.
Finance Minister Ahmed Shide opened the forum by emphasizing that climate action is central to Ethiopia’s national development agenda.
During the summit, the CIF unveiled the “ARISE” program, a new $40 million resilience initiative designed to mobilize public and private finance for sustainable economies.
Parallel to its climate goals, Ethiopia is accelerating its technological footprint. The Ethiopian Space Science and Geospatial Institute (SSGI) confirmed on Monday that it is finalizing plans to build a satellite Assembly, Integration, and Testing (AIT) facility in cooperation with Russia.
“Our goal is not only to use satellites but to build and validate them domestically,” said SSGI Director General Abdisa Yilma. The facility is expected to reduce foreign currency expenditure and support Ethiopia’s goal of launching 10 new satellites by 2035 for disaster management and crop monitoring.
