JUBA – Political uncertainty gripped Juba on Tuesday following hints that the long-delayed national elections, currently scheduled for December 2026, could face another postponement due to a lack of funding and security sector reforms.
President Salva Kiir has declared his intention to run, but the rift with Vice President Riek Machar remains unhealed.
Meanwhile, the country faces a catastrophic hunger crisis, with the UN reporting that two-thirds of the population is severely food insecure.
The spillover from the civil war in Sudan has further complicated the situation, with recent drone strikes near the border disrupting vital oil export routes.
