KAMPALA – President Yoweri Museveni intensified his push for the East Africa Mega Refinery project on Tuesday, positioning the facility as a strategic bulwark against global fuel price volatility.
The refinery, backed by both Uganda and Kenya, aims to reduce the region’s dependence on expensive fuel imports. “We are no longer just a market for others; we are becoming producers,” Museveni told energy stakeholders.
The project comes as the East African Crude Oil Pipeline (EACOP) nears critical completion phases.
However, regional security remain a concern; a new report from Amnesty International on Tuesday accused the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) of “rampant” war crimes in eastern Congo, prompting the Ugandan military (UPDF) to announce an intensification of cross-border operations.
