KIGALI — Rwanda solidified its status as a rising regional power in sports on Tuesday, as its national handball teams returned to Kigali following a historic “double” victory at the 2026 Men’s IHF Trophy – Africa Zone V in Addis Ababa.
The victory, which saw Rwanda sweep both the Under-20 and Under-18 titles, is being hailed by officials in Kigali as a testament to the country’s long-term investment in youth and sports infrastructure.
Dominance on the Court
The Junior (U20) team secured their title after a high-octane 39-37 win against hosts Ethiopia. The star of the tournament, Valentin Mugisha, finished as the top scorer with 60 goals, including 13 in the final alone.
In the Youth (U18) category, Rwanda edged out Burundi in a dramatic 39-38 final that was decided in the final 17 seconds. “This was a test of character,” said Rwanda Handball Federation officials. “Our players showed that Rwanda can compete and win at the highest levels in the region.”
The final standings for the tournament were:
Rwanda
Ethiopia (U20) / Burundi (U18)
Kenya
Uganda
The “Visit Rwanda” Strategy
The sporting success aligns with Rwanda’s broader “soft power” strategy. The government has spent millions on sponsorship deals (such as with Arsenal and PSG) and high-end sports facilities like the BK Arena.
“Sports is not just a game; it’s an industry and a branding tool,” said a Ministry of Sports official. “When our youth win in Addis Ababa, they are ambassadors for the new Rwanda—disciplined, competitive, and successful.”
Continental Ambitions
With these wins, both Rwandan teams have qualified for the Continental phase of the IHF Trophy. This comes at a time when Rwanda is increasingly hosting major international sporting events, positioning Kigali as a hub for African athletics.
While critics occasionally question the high spending on sports and tourism marketing, the jubilant reception for the teams in Kigali suggests that, for now, the “sports diplomacy” strategy has strong domestic buy-in. The focus now shifts to the continental stage, where Rwanda will face the giants of West and North African handball.
