NAIROBI– French President Emmanuel Macron arrived in Nairobi on Sunday for a high-profile meeting with his Kenyan counterpart, William Ruto. The visit is part of an African tour aimed at renewing France’s engagement with the continent and counterbalancing growing influence from other global powers.
The two leaders held extensive talks at State House Nairobi, focusing on a “report card” of France’s Africa policy one year before the end of Macron’s current term. Central to the discussions was the “Africa Forward Summit,” a two-day forum co-hosted by Macron starting Monday.
The summit will bring together regional heads of state and business executives to address cross-border investment and sustainable infrastructure.
President Ruto emphasized Kenya’s role as a strategic green energy hub, while French officials noted that this is the first such forum held in an English-speaking African nation.
The partnership is expected to unlock significant credit facilities for the modernization of Kenya’s urban rail networks and the Port of Mombasa.
Despite the diplomatic warmth, observers note that anti-French sentiment in other parts of the continent remains a hurdle for Paris as it seeks to pivot away from its historical “Francafrique” strategy toward more transparent, commercial-based alliances.
