DJIBOUTI CITY – Djibouti remains a bastion of relative stability in the volatile Horn of Africa, though political observers on Wednesday noted increased domestic speculation regarding the planned 2026 leadership transition.
President Ismaïl Omar Guelleh has previously indicated he will step down, and while no major policy shifts are expected, the “carefully managed transition” to a successor is the primary topic in the capital’s political circles.
Djibouti continues to leverage its strategic location at the Bab-el-Mandeb Strait, with its foreign military bases providing essential revenue.
However, the country faces a significant debt burden, primarily to China, and risks from regional instability, including the spillover effects of conflict in Ethiopia’s Sitti Zone and threats to maritime security.
