MOMBASA, Kenya– France has deployed 800 military personnel and three advanced warships to Kenya’s Port of Mombasa in a move described as a strategic operational partnership to bolster maritime security in the Western Indian Ocean.
The troops, participating in joint exercises with the Kenyan Navy, will focus on cadet training and the protection of critical shipping lanes. French Ambassador Arnaud Suquet emphasized the operational nature of the deployment, citing growing global concern over piracy and regional instability.
The arrival of French forces coincides with preparations for the Africa-France Summit in Nairobi, scheduled for May, marking the first time the summit will convene in a non-Francophone country. Kenyan authorities have described the deployment as reinforcing Nairobi’s role as a central security partner for Western nations in East Africa.
Analysts note that the French presence also signals increasing international attention on Kenya’s maritime domain, which hosts some of Africa’s busiest ports and critical energy and trade routes.
